Beware, this is a BIG beer. Brimming with luscious roasted coffee and chocolate malt flavours which are balanced by a brisk bitterness and bold freshness from the hops. If you’re feeling politically incorrect try it with your favourite cigar, or a dram of your best single malt whisky. Or, if your tooth is sweeter, why not jump in at the deep end with the most decadent dessert of all; half a bottle in a glass with a generous scoop of vanilla ice cream on top (beer geeks like us know it as the Imperial Stout Float). Or simply enjoy it on its own as a decadent dessert or night cap – the perfect winter warmer! If you don’t already know the history of Russian Imperial Stouts please check it out on the internet, it’s a good story. But remember, although based on that century-old classic style, this beer is a very modern interpretation, like all our beers!

9.0-10.0% abv. Malted barley. Another recipe from the Barclay Perkins archive, from 1856. The Imperial Brown Stouts developed into what became known as the Russian Imperial Stouts, and this particular recipe developed into the Courage RIS, which is most notable because a) it was an excellent beer, and b) it continued to be produced until 1992, as the only surviving link to a certain brewing tradition that was huge in London, and made London famous, for over 200 years. And of course, a tradition which has now been lost. And the beer is black, not brown. Dark black. And round and smooth. Gentle. Coffee and cocoa aroma, then leading to dark fruits, dried fruits, raisin, fig, prune. Even plum. Some sour berries. Through the long finish of hop bitterness entwined with roast and char.

Re-Release of the first of the DB Signature Editions 2019. This time as our first beer of the 2019-2020 Seasonals. Same recipe, other design.
So much thicker than his little brother from the Classic line, that he’s basically a brother-in-law. Twice as much cacoa nibs, extra alcohol, you do the math. Also added are Sumatra coffee beans, burned by our friends from Bosbrand. The soft, sweet and creamy hints of chocolate and Nitro Cold Brew coffee allow this beer a delicate piece of balance between all the violence.
